Types of Depression Medication and Supplements

There are several different types of depression medication out there.  Depending on how severe your depression is doctors will prescribe different medications for you specifically.  However, depression medication does not always work.  Depending on your body and how it reacts to the medication it may not be doing you any good.  There are a few factors you should take into consideration before beginning any depression medication.  For example, make sure you read and understand the side effects that may come with the medication, also be sure to tell the doctor if you are taking any other medications and be sure to check in with your doctor every couple of weeks to make sure the medication is working for you.

There are three different types of depression medication.  Those three are: tricyclic drugs, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.  All three types of medications are used to treat depression, however, each medication is targeting to different types of depression.  Tricyclic drugs are for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.  A side-effect of trycyclic drugs is that they may make your skin very sensitive to sunlight, therefore, try to stay away from to much sunlight or you may get a skin rash, begin to itch, get redness or other discoloration, or even a severe sunburn. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors are for depression and bulimia nervosa.  A side-effect of monoamine oxidase inhibitors is that they make you feel tired and sluggish most of the time.  Many times people say if feels like they are in a daze all day.  The final type of drugs, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are for every type of depression especially when you are over eating or sleeping excessively.  Some general side effects of taking these drugs are: nausea, drowsiness, headaches, changes in weight and sexual behavior, tremors and increased sweating.  All these medications are helpful, but it is very important to figure out which one is best for you.

Depression affects over 13 million people a year in the United States.  There are many triggers that may lead to depression.  For example, people who have a major depressive disorder may have just gone through a very traumatic or stressful event in their lives, for instance, the death of a loved one or the loss a job.  The most important thing to remember is that if you have been feeling down or sad continuously for 2 weeks or more do not just brush it off.  You should immediately go speak with a qualified healthcare professional so that you can begin treating your depression.
