Many people suffer from anxiety and/or depression at one time or another in their life. Although many people tend to believe that they are one in the same, they are not. Anxiety and depression are very similar yet very different. Depression tends to create emotions such as despair, anger, loneliness and hopelessness. It also brings down energy levels; therefore, making people feel overwhelmed when doing their normal day-to-day activities. Anxiety, on the other hand, creates emotions such as fear and panic. It makes people feel threatened in certain situations that others would not feel the same way. It also causes people to worry about leaving the house and constantly have a nagging worry about almost everything. People sometimes get the two confused because they are treated in about the same manner. It is shown that a great number of people who suffer from depression are also affected by anxiety. Because of this connection anxiety and depression are often referred to as the fraternal twins of mood disorders.
Anxiety is believed to be caused by a malfunction of brain chemistry. It is not the normal fear most people feel before taking a test or waiting for the results of a test. To be anxious is to feel that you are always in danger; it doesn't matter where you are or whom you are with, you never shake the feeling that something dangerous is around you. Most people will realize that they are worried for no reason but they are not able to get rid of it. The persistent worrying is very hard to control and often interferes with daily activities. It also causes physical problems, such as headaches, muscle tension and fatigue.
Depression often makes people moody or just feel very sad for a few days. Eventually they begin to experience long periods of feeling sad and begin to segregate themselves from everyone they know and love. They begin to lose interest in any and all activities and they also lose their concentration and energy. This illness not only changes the way a person acts it also changes they way they feel and think. Some common symptoms are: sad or irritable mood nearly every day, loss of interest in most activities, change in weight, sleeplessness or over sleeping, restlessness, constant fatigue, feeling of loneliness and/or worthlessness, difficulty concentrating and, at time, thoughts of suicide or death.
It has also been shown that this illness may be linked to smoking. Surveys have proven that an increased frequency of smoking is often a symptom of being depressed. Most people tend to smoke more to mask their pain and suffering, what they do not realize is that they are actually hurting themselves even more. Addicted smokers have shown an abnormal attachment to cigarettes and feel that the drugs in cigarette smoke are some type of brain reward. Although it is very hard to quit smoking on a normal basis, when you are suffering from depression it is even ten times harder. People who attempt to quit smoking while suffering from this feel a decreased level of pleasure and many mood swings.
